The driver, who wanted to remain anonymous, said there wasn't enough business for those already working in the Illawarra.

A recently released national review of competition policy recommended the taxi industry needed to be reformed to reduce the "barriers to entry".

But the Wollongong cabbie scoffed at the idea of introducing a competitor for Wollongong Radio Cabs.

"It would be ridiculous," he said. "Last night I made $42. It was very bad.

"Apart from Monday and Saturday nights it's very quiet. It can be a lottery as to what you get. You can do a 12-hour shift and make a hundred bucks."

He said in his experience there were more drivers than customers most nights. He pointed to a Thursday night when it was so quiet at 12.30am there were 20 taxis lined up at a city rank.

He saw no point in staying out so he went home instead.

The driver said a large part of the problem was free bus services like the Gong Shuttle and buses that give university students lifts to and from venues like The Grand and the Hotel Illawarra on Wednesday and Thursday nights.

"Last night there were hundreds and hundreds of kids at The Grand but there were three great big buses. They pick them up from Campus East and the university and they drop them off at the pub and then they pick them up and take them home.

"We're left with the scraps of people who want to go home a little earlier or who have missed the bus.

The possible introduction of other services like UberX, where people use their private car to pick up passengers, was also a concern.

The driver said cabbies had to undergo police checks and there were also various security measures in Wollongong Radio Cab vehicles to protect passengers.

"The cars we have now have all got cameras in them," he said.

"If the driver does something inappropriate or there's something wrong with the fare, they can take a driver's number and report them and it's all on camera. And we've got GPS tracking in our cabs."
