The 41-year-old man was arrested about 9.30am on Wednesday after police used a Taser to subdue him on a footpath on Northcliffe Drive.
The man allegedly produced a knife when approached by patrolling police.
Residents told the Mercury the road filled with police cars before officers ran after the man with their guns drawn.
‘‘I heard a couple of ‘‘doot-doot’’ - it wasn’t like a proper gunshot, it was a Taser,’’ a Northcliffe Drive resident said. ‘‘It happened that quickly.’’
The arrest came 8 hours after the man allegedly went to a home on Graham Street, Unanderra and shot a 36-year-old man in the face.
The wounded man was in a critical but stable condition on Wednesday, and was expected to survive his wound.
He was treated at the scene by ambulance paramedics and taken to Wollongong Hospital.
He was later transferred to another hospital.
Police established a crime scene at the home, which was examined by specialist forensic investigators.
Detectives also interviewed a number of witnesses at the scene. One neighbour, who did not want to be identified, said he had been sound asleep when the din of sirens startled him awake just before 1am on Wednesday.
‘‘One minute I was asleep, and then suddenly there were lights and sirens flashing up the street, it was a bit of a shock.
‘‘It’s not really the kind of thing you see here,’’ the neighbour said.
The accused man was taken to Lake Illawarra police station and charged with attempting to discharge a loaded firearm with intent to murder and resisting police.
He was refused bail and will appear in court on Thursday.
