Mr Lancaster has left Access Law Group which he said would continue to run under the guidance of Tom Ellicott.

And he said he left knowing that business would remain strong.

"When Rod Cunich employed me back in 1999, he basically told me you should aim to replace yourself as part of any good succession plan and aim to have someone else step into your job," he said.

Mr Lancaster said senior associate James Welch was a great example of succession planning really working well.

"Mentoring and bringing people through is part of that process," he said.

"And I felt it was time to get out of what I was doing at Access Law Group and focus on mediation and still do dispute resolution through mitigation but in a smaller firm focused on that. I would like to do mediation where you have a matter brought to you, you get to meet the clients, you deal with that specific issue and at the end of the day hopefully you have a resolution that both parties can live with and move on with. In some cases mediation is good because it preserves relationships. In other cases where relationships don't matter you still might achieve a commercial outcome."

Mr Lancaster said there were not a lot of people doing mediation in Wollongong and he was keen to focus on it with his new practice.

"I will also be doing wills and estate disputes as well," he said.

The branding and logo for Lancaster Law and Mediation also has a connection to the area law Mr Lancaster is focusing on.

He said the inspiration came from Game of Thrones and the War of the Roses which was a bloody time of conflict in English history.

The Lancasters and the Yorks fought for more than three decades and after many lives were lost in one bloody battle, Henry VII resolved the conflict by marrying Elizabeth of York.

Through marriage and mediation, the conflict was resolved, which is why Mr Lancaster is using a Tudor rose made up of the red rose of Lancaster and the white rose of York to create his logo.

Mr Lancaster plans to continue to support local charities and sport at his new practice.
