Dragons five-eighth Gareth Widdop wants to return to England and play in the Super League one day but has denied it will be at the cost of cutting his contract with St George Illawarra short.
Widdop is contracted to the Red V until the end of 2017 but the rugby league rumour mill has been running hot over the past month with whispers the English international wants out of the club.
Super League club Leeds Rhinos have reportedly offered the playmaker big dollars to move back to the UK as early as this season.
It follows rumours Widdop was being poached by Manly last month.
The suggestion has been floated that Widdop isn’t enjoying the Dragons’ new structures under coach Paul McGregor, which seem to be favouring halves partner Benji Marshall and the right side of the field in attack.
Widdop was the club’s best player in 2014 but has struggled to maintain that same standard so far this season.
He brushed aside the Leeds rumour on Sunday night following a 31-6 win over Bulldogs, which also marked his 100th NRL game.
‘‘There's been plenty of rumours going around recently and like I said before I just concentrate on my football,’’ Widdop said.
‘‘That's the first I've heard of it (the Leeds offer).’’
Fairfax Media understands Leeds boss Gary Hetherington has contacted Widdop about a possible return home to England.
But Hetherington was coy when questioned about the offer.
‘‘We certainly don't talk about what we may or may not be doing," Hetherington said.
"We only announce it when it's done."
