Since Netflix released the 13-part series on April 10, Australia has ranked sixth in the world for the highest number of illicit downloads, totalling 101,025, reports Variety, citing Excipio figures.

It's further proof that audiences have not been swayed by the accessibility of content offered by the recent Australia launch of Netflix, nor the threat to illegal downloaders reflected in the Dallas Buyers Club case.

Daredevil is the first of four planned series for Marvel and Netflix and has been widely critically-acclaimed.

Matt Murdock, played by Charlie Cox, plays the lead role as a lawyer who fights crime at night. Murdock was blinded as a child in a freak radioactive accident and has developed heightened sensory powers. His arch-rival is New York crime overlord Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio). Rosario Dawson also stars in the show.

The greatest number of illicit downloads for Daredevil was in Brazil, totalling more than 190,000, followed by India, the United States, Britain, France and Australia.

Earlier this week, Australia ranked fourth in the global piracy statistics for downloading season five of Games of Thrones, with nearly 150,000 downloads on Monday.

Game of Thrones is only available in Australia via Foxtel's channel Showcase in an exclusive deal with HBO. Such restrictions have come under fire because of the cost of having to pay at least $50 a month to watch the highly popular show weekly. Whereas Netflix boasts a much cheaper subscription model at $8.99 a month that allows viewers to binge on whole seasons of its shows at any time in a bid to diminish piracy. But even that, it seems, isn't enough for Australian viewers.

Netflix has 62.3 million subscribers worldwide, with 20 million viewers of that figure outside of the US.

Australian viewers have been swamped with three new streaming services this year, with Netflix, Stan and Presto taking on pay TV.
