The Canaries were heavy underdogs heading into the match after Wests opened their campaign with a 44-0 drubbing of Collegians last week but ran in five tries - three to centre Lulia Lulia - to upset the Devils and claim second spot on the ladder.
It came just a matter of weeks after Wests handed Dapto a 46-8 hammering in the first round of the preseason Challenge Cup.
Leikvoll said following the loss that his focus was on round one and the strategy has proven fruitful with a 2-0 start to the season.
"I'm really pleased for the boys,"Leikvoll said.
"I was pleased with some things last week as well it's never easy out there on a Friday night at Corrimal when it's wet so they're good results overall for us.
"I think a lot of people thought we weren't a chance at all [against Wests] so that's always pleasing.
"They're a really good side and they're going to be in the mix all year so it was a good win for us.
"They had a couple of injuries but I can't fault the guys' effort.
"You can only beat who's in front of you and the boys were spot on today."
It was a day in which the club's veterans stood up with Lulia's treble complemented by tries to Mick Murphy and Matt Handcock, and Blake Wallace's perfect five from five with the boot.
"Right across the park we were good," Leikvoll said. "Dean Janda was solid for us out of dummy half and Lulia got a hat-trick and provided those really strong punching runs when we needed them. It was a really good team performance - I couldn't fault anyone."
The Canaries had to wait until round five for their first win last year and notched just two victories in the opening 10 rounds. Their perfect start to 2015 season is a flyer in comparison but Leikvoll wasn't getting carried away.
"We can't get too ahead of ourselves," he continued.
"It's definitely not a finished product yet. I still think we had a few lapses, I don't think it was a complete 80-minute performance.
"We can enjoy the win but we'll be back to it Tuesday and we've got to get back to that mentality of winning again.
"We'll have a hard task next week against Collies. We've got some work to do still ... we'll work hard and keep ourselves grounded."
Meanwhile, Thirroul bounced back to beat Corrimal 34-16.
