The Illawarra Cycle Club member rode his brother's bike to victory at last weekend's NSW Hill Climb Championships in Bathurst, a week after two of his bicycles were stolen.

Police are investigating the aggravated break and enter at Mr Bennett's Cordeaux Road home, which happened while he, his wife, their daughter and her boyfriend were asleep inside.

The 50-year-old has offered a $1000 reward for the return of his "beloved bikes", which had been securely stored in a downstairs room.

"They stole three pushbikes and then they threw one into the bushes on the way across the road, so we got one back but they took the two good ones," Mr Bennett said.

"I'll put $1000 up [as a reward], because my excess for the insurance is $1000.

"They are no good to anyone because one is a road bike and one is a track bike, which is a velodrome [bike] so it's got no brakes, it's a fixed gear and it's only good for racing on the track.

"Unless you want to ride it around taking a punt with no brakes . . . it's not really good to anyone except me who races them."

The road bike was Wilier Cento branded and the track bike a Polygon, with a combined value of $11,000.

Carbon-fibre wheels worth about $4000 were also stolen, along with a wallet, handbag, iPod and a chainsaw.

A confronting aspect of the break-in was revealed the following morning when Mr Bennett woke to find the kitchen ransacked and what he believed could have become a weapon sitting on the bench.

"We found all the cupboard doors open, but they actually took a knife out of the knife block and had that on the kitchen bench," he said.

"I don't know, if they got disturbed they were going to [use it as] last minute protection, I don't know.

"In one way we're glad we never woke up and in another way we're disappointed."
