A fitting tribute to the Anzac spirit is how Wollongong RSL sub-branch president Peter Poulton describes the unveiling of a new brass plaque at Wollongong Memorial Gardens in Unanderra.
The plaque commemorating the Centenary of Anzac is in the Ex-Services section and reads "100 Years of Anzac. The Spirit Lives. 2014-2018. Lest We Forget."
The cemetery contains the memorials of some 250 ex-service men and women.
"I want to thank the [Wollongong] council for organising this plaque. It really is fitting," Mr Poulton said.
Wollongong Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery said the plaque was a small gesture to acknowledge their sacrifices.
"It recognises not only those who lost their lives on a battlefield far from home, but also the ongoing physical and emotional scars that can be left with a soldier their entire life," Cr Bradbery said.
He said the council had taken a number of steps to recognise the Centenary of Anzac.
"This includes the planting of a lone pine in the Wollongong Botanic Garden, restoration work on four cenotaphs and this plaque in the gardens. These small gestures are important because they remind us of what war can cost a family, a community and a country," Cr Bradbery said.
