An Endeavour Energy spokeswoman said 40 repair crews were working across the region on Tuesday.
In the morning, crews restored power to 148 premises in Scarborough and also 141 in Unanderra.
By 3pm power was also restored to 368 customers in Helensburgh and 288 in Wombarra. At that time, work was ongoing to return power to 377 homes in Stanwell Park and 148 in Otford.
The situation for Endeavour is much better than for Ausgrid, which supplies power to Sydney, the Central Coast and Hunter.
That supplier was reporting 180,000 homes and businesses without power on Tuesday.
An Ausgrid spokesman said "many" customers would not have their power restored until Wednesday.
The Endeavour Energy spokeswoman said the number of homes without power in the Illawarra had risen through the morning.
"We are expecting the number of customers without power to climb as further damage is reported," an Endeavour Energy spokeswoman said.
"Maintenance that was planned for today has been cancelled and all available crews will be focused on repairing storm damage and safely restoring supply to affected customers."
On Monday night across the Illawarra and Southern Highlands, Endeavour Energy worked to restore power to more than 650 premises.
This included 220 in Jamberoo, 60 in Kiama and 58 in Wollongong.
"Emergency workers worked through the night to restore power where it was safe to do so," the spokeswoman said.
"Endeavour Energy thanks customers for their patience as we work through these difficult and trying conditions to commence the process of safely restoring power."
With wind speeds predicted to reach 70km/h at times late on Tuesday and more heavy rains expected, more homes were expected to lose power in the following 24 hours.
The spokeswoman warned people to stay clear of fallen power lines and report them to Endeavour Energy on 131 003 or triple-0.
"You should always stay well clear of fallen power lines or electrical infrastructure and always treat them as live," she said.
"Remember electricity can 'jump'. You don't have to be touching power lines to get a shock so keep your distance."
