William Spedding, 63, was arrested at a Bonny Hills home on Wednesday afternoon by officers from Strike Force Rosann, the group tasked with finding missing toddler William Tyrrell.
The task force's Detective Inspector Gary Jubelin, has said the arrest does not relate to the three-year-old boy's disappearance.
On Wednesday night police charged Spedding with five counts of sexual intercourse with a child under 10 years and two counts of common assault. The offences against two girls aged three and six are alleged to have occurred in the Campbelltown area in 1987.
Spedding's wife and another male supporter arrived before court and sat in the public gallery nearest to the dock.
Solicitor Rob Hoyles applied for bail, saying Spedding had a clean record, strong community ties and intended to plead not guilty.
"As shocking as the allegations are there is a real question of Mr Spedding's guilt," Mr Hoyles said
"Mr Spedding denies the allegations and will deny them to his final breath.
"The case is only as strong as it was in 1987."
But magistrate Thomas Hodgson said it was a "reasonably strong prosecution case" with a "custodial sentence likely".
Spedding swallowed as bail was refused.
Spedding will next appear before the court on August 18.
