Wollongong commemorations are likely to be held under partly cloudy skies on Saturday, with a high chance of showers and the chance of a storm from late morning.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, a strong cold front was expected to cross most of NSW on Friday night and into Saturday, with winds turning colder south-westerly in its wake.

Strong and gusty winds could return on Sunday, thanks to a low pressure system that is expected to develop well off the NSW coast on Saturday night or early Sunday. 

The system will move steadily east during Sunday, however strong and gusty winds are predicted along the coastal fringe.

The windy forecast comes as the clean-up from the intense east coast low that pelted the region this week continued on Friday.

Storm-battered residents have been offered a special green waste collection, through a joint initiative between Wollongong City Council and the SES (see separate story).

Elsewhere, council expects the Continental Pool to reopen on Saturday and pools at Port Kembla and Thirroul to be back in action on Sunday.

Both are subject to water-quality testing. 

Meanwhile, Illawarra rail commuters no longer face disrupted services on the South Coast Line.

The line had been closed between Kiama and Oak Flats since Tuesday due to flooding, but reopened on Thursday night.

Drivers were again travelling on the Illawarra Highway between Tongarra Road and the Princes Highway on Friday after it reopened about 7am.
