Peter Bahlman said after running his own practice for a while, working for a larger firm was too good an opportunity to miss.
"We are merging our practices into a partnership," Mr Bahlman said.
"I started working here on Monday. Initially I ran into Jeff [David] on the street and he asked me if I would be interested. I have been practising on my own for a little ... and I thought it would be great.
"This firm [Hansons] has always been known for its commercial strength along with personal injury and family law as well.
"And my area is commercial and wills and estates so that is where I fit in."
Mr Bahlman said Hansons was one of the larger firms in town and he liked and got on well with everyone on the team.
He said the fact it had such a low turnover of people working for the practice spoke for itself.
Mr Bahlman said he had previously been at 90 Market Street for three years and at 70 Market Street for nine.
The merged firm under the name Hansons Lawyers has been around since 1990 following the merger of two longstanding law firms in the Illawarra, with the oldest starting in the 1960s.
Anna Masi said there were now five partners including herself and Mr Bahlman along with Jeff David, Kerry Kyriakoudes and Tom Sherley.
Other lawyers at Hansons are Mark Nolan, Ann Woods, Stephanie Dyball and Hayley Williams.
Former partners Kieran Biddle, who came out of partnership at the end of last year, and Harold Hanson AM still act as consultants.
There are more than 20 people in the new merged Hansons Lawyers.
And Mrs Masi said the best thing about it was everyone complemented each other.
"I think it is both a professional and a cultural fit," she said.
"As individuals we all get along."
"There is a very healthy mix of genders and ages," she said.
