Police received numerous calls from members of the public concerned about a large party at a property on Rani Avenue in Shell Cove around 9.30pm.
Numerous Lake Illawarra police were dispatched to the location.
On their way to the scene, two officers, travelling in a marked police car, encountered a group of about 150 teenagers congregated at the intersection of Brindabella Avenue and Cove Bouelvard, Shell Cove – about 200 metres from the party.
A police car stopped to speak to the youths but was immediately pelted with a number of bottles.
The two male officers in the car were able to arrest a 16-year-old boy who allegedly threw one of the bottles.
The teen was taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station, before being released into the custody of a guardian due to his high level of intoxication, police said.
Police said he would be interviewed in the coming days.
The constable who had been travelling in the police car was taken to Shellharbour Hospital to treat a cut above his right eye.
Police said the party was broken up and the large groups of youths congregating in the near vicinity were all dispersed.
