The regional director for the Illawarra, Ms Mastroianni said the much-talked about extension from Waterfall to St Peters was one of the key projects to which the government needed to commit funding.
"For me that really is a priority," Ms Mastroianni said.
"Because it's such a big project we have to get them to invest money in a feasibility study or else it's never going to move. We're saying it's got to become a priority and it's got to start somewhere.
"We know they're not going to fund it in the next state budget but they've got to fund at least feasibility studies on it."
Ms Mastroianni said Newcastle was getting a better connection to Sydney from NorthConnex and now it was only fair the attention turned to the Illawarra.
"Knowing that NorthConnex is happening for the Hunter, it's our turn. It is absolutely our turn," she said.
The extension is one of four Illawarra projects that feature in an NRMA submission to the state government ahead of the budget.
The other projects include the extension of Memorial Drive to Bulli Pass and further safety improvements to Picton Road.
The NRMA is also calling for four climbing lanes on Mt Ousley Road - two northbound between Cataract and Bellambi creeks and two southbound between Bulli Pass and Cataract Creek.
Ms Mastroianni praised the government for spending money on the Princes Highway upgrades, on Picton Road and the pledge to build the Albion Park Rail bypass, but said there was more work to be done.
