Microsoft has developed a facial recognition program that claims to give you the cold, hard facts on how old you really look. According to the How-Old.net website, the feature is still being improved - so much so that they apologise if the complex algorithms don't quite get the age and gender right.

For some Friday fun, we've run 10 federal politicians through the software to test its accuracy, with mixed results:

TONY ABBOTT

Real age: 57

Leading a country will age you more than most jobs, but it seems Prime Minister Tony Abbott is doing well in the eyes of Microsoft. Mr Abbott's leisure and fitness habits, which include cycling and reading Winston Churchill, seem to agree with him.

BILL SHORTEN

Real age: 47

It seems Opposition Leader Bill Shorten is feeling the effects of politics more than the man whose job he wants. It has got to be pretty taxing, overseeing the constant cut and thrust of Labor factional politics.

JULIE BISHOP

Real age: 58

As well as impressing on the world stage, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop is a person who pays attention to her appearance. And it is certainly paying dividends. Bill Gates has chopped eight years of her actual age.

TANYA PLIBERSEK

​Real age: 45

Deputy Opposition Leader Tanya Plibersek is pretty much as old, or as young, as she looks. Just one year is the difference between reality and the software's interpretation.

WYATT ROY

Real age: 24

As the youngest ever federal MP, it's hard to know whether Wyatt Roy would be happy that the software has added 11 years to his age. Would he embrace the sudden gift of an extra decade of wisdom? Or is he still enjoying the wonders of youth?

BOB HAWKE

Real age: 85

It seems like just yesterday the former prime minister was calling bosses "bums" and sipping on yard glasses. Happily, Microsoft has given him a reprieve of some four years.

MALCOLM TURNBULL

Real age: 60

This is just unfair. 46. The image has to be as airbrushed as an Emma Watson shoot, but really? The prime ministerial aspirant is certainly looking suave in this much-hyped GQ profile in which he told the writer: "I get out of bed and I am me."

BRONWYN BISHOP

Real age: 72

Bravo, Microsoft. Only two years off the mark (although, just quietly, you have let the Speaker down in the gender department). Two years of ageing could certainly be a reasonable side-effect of watching over the fractious House of Representatives. After all, she has been breaking records left, right and centre (although mostly just left) in the number of MPs kicked out.

PENNY WONG

Real age: 46

Senate Opposition Leader Penny Wong apparently looks three years younger than she really is. You could argue it has been a fun time to be a Labor member of the Senate, tripping up the government - with the help of the diverse crossbench - at every turn.

CHRISTOPHER PYNE

Real age: 47

Once the youngest MP in parliament, Education Minister Christopher Pyne's more than two decades in the House of Representatives are apparently showing. Perhaps the recent fight over higher education reform has taken its toll. An extra nine years seems a bit unkind though.
