Illawarra basketballer Angus Glover is on the cusp of selection in the Australian under 19 side for this year's world championships in Greece.

Still only 16, Glover is part of a 16-man Emus squad which will be cut to a final 12-man team prior to a May 25 training camp.

A final camp will be held in the first week of June before the team heads overseas for warm-up games against Spain and Croatia.

The Emus then fly to Greece for the June 27 start of the world titles.

"It'd be amazing to be part of it," Glover, a Holy Spirit year 11 student, said.

"I feel pretty good. I just have to wait and see and hopefully I get in. It all comes down to what the coach wants with combinations and things like that."

The Emus are coached by former Wollongong Hawks and Perth Wildcats guard Adam Caporn.

"He's really good," Glover said.

"He tells you what you're doing well, lets you know what you have to work on and gives you positive criticism. There's always something to work on."

Glover was one of four Illawarra players who represented the triumphant NSW Country team at the recent Australian under 18 titles.

Averaging 13.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.3 assists for the tournament, the 195cm guard spearheaded NSW Country's 82-66 defeat of NSW Metro in the final with a game-high 24 points.

He will remain eligible for under 19 selection in two years and won't beat himself up if he doesn't make this year's cut.

"I've got nothing to lose really, but I'd love to make it this year and I made sure I did my best to get on the team," he said.

"Obviously the talent level is pretty high and it's pretty competitive for spots. Hopefully I'm in there."

Glover, who is related to Hawks coach Gordie McLeod, is on track to score a scholarship with a Division One college in America.

But he is taking small steps and doesn't want to get ahead of himself.

"I'm starting to look, but I still want to keep my options open and see what happens," he said.

"I'm just focused on school and basketball at the moment."

The Emus are drawn in Group C at the world championships, alongside Canada, Italy and Tunisia.
