And there are also at least 12 other Australians, including two grandmothers, detained overseas awaiting trial who could face a similar fate.
Henry Chin was convicted and sentenced to death in China a decade ago after attempting to mail 300 grams of methamphetamine hidden in computer software between Shenzhen, in south-eastern China, and Australia.
The box was intercepted in 2004 and police searched a home and found another 700 grams in his kitchen and living room.
The last known status of Chin's case was that his death sentence had been suspended, but little else of his story is known.
Pham Trung Dung was convicted in Vietnam last year. The 37-year-old was caught trying to smuggle two suitcases of heroin on to a flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Australia in May 2013.
Vietnamese press has reported he was given a one-day trial, during which he claimed he was hired by an unidentified man and paid $40,000 to transport the four kilograms of heroin. In Vietnam, possessing or trafficking 100 grams of heroin is punishable by death.
Bengali Sherrif was handed a death sentence in a Chinese court last month. He and Queensland man Ibrahim Jalloh were caught at Guangzhou airport in June 2014 trying to smuggle methamphetamine to Australia.
Sherrif's death sentence will be commuted to life in prison if he is of good behaviour for two years while in custody. Jalloh has reportedly not yet faced trial.
The pair are among at least 10 Australians to have been charged in China in the past year with serious drug offences that can attract the death penalty.
Most, if not all, involve trafficking ice from Guangzhou, the city favoured by multinational drug syndicates because of its international transport links and ready availability of precursor chemicals.
Among those also detained and facing death are Sydney man Peter Gardner, 25, whose friend and travel partner Sydney woman Kalynda Davis was later released to return home, and former Adelaide jockey Anthony Roger Bannister, 43.
Outside of China, western Sydney grandmother Maria Elvira Pinto Exposto is due to appear before Malaysia's high court and if found guilty, she will be sentenced to hang.
The 52-year-old mother of four was allegedly found with 1.1 kilograms of ice in her suitcase at Kuala Lumpur International Airport in December 2014.
Mrs Pinto Exposto claims she was the victim of a sophisticated online military romance scam that has entrapped thousands of people.
No trial date has been set, but there is an expectation it will take place at the end of this year.
Two other Australians, Mai Cong Thanh and Nguyen Van Chinh, were sentenced to death in Vietnam in 2005 after being convicted for trafficking heroin.
However, the men were granted presidential clemency a year later and their sentences commuted to life imprisonment.
