The Dragons are bracing for Rabbitohs star Adam Reynolds to make a late pitch for a maiden NSW jumper on Monday night as they face being without star fullback Josh Dugan for the clash with the defending premiers.
Dugan will be monitored through the week after scans on Monday cleared him of any serious ligament injury to his knee with Peter Mata'utia named at fullback on Tuesday.
While he'll be racing the clock to be fit for Monday's clash, it's unlikely that the "significant contusion" suffered in Australia's 26-12 Test loss to New Zealand will keep Dugan out of action for more than one week, keeping his Origin hopes alive.
"Josh had an MRI scan and subsequent assessment from Dragons medical staff which suggests he has a significant contusion to the right thigh," Dragons physio Dan Lawson said.
"His knee is painful and swollen but it appears he has no major ligamentous injury. A decision on his fitness for the upcoming game will be made later in the week."
The rest of the Dragons rep contingent came through the weekend unscathed and were all named in Paul McGregor's 19-man squad on Tuesday. Origin hopeful Tyson Frizell will return after missing two matches through suspension while Eto Nabuli will also play after missing the Anzac Day Roosters clash with a minor knee complaint.
"The only [injury] we've got out of the weekend thus far is Josh," McGregor said.
"Everyone else has come through all right. Those [rep] guys are off until Wednesday to get over the bumps and bruises but otherwise we're OK."
Reynolds hasn't played since the Rabbitohs' controversial Good Friday victory over the Bulldogs in which he was felled by Canterbury captain James Graham as he attempted a match-winning field goal. His form to start the year thrust him and halves partner Luke Keary into contention for NSW as incumbent Blues pair Trent Hodkinson and Josh Reynolds struggled at the Bulldogs.
Speculation has Laurie Daley's potential halves pairing for game one changing by the day but Reynolds would need to play both of the Rabbitohs' next two games to make any claim for an Origin debut.
Keary - ruled out of Sunday's City Country clash to rest a foot injury - was named at halfback alongside the returning John Sutton who hasn't played since breaking his jaw against the Roosters in round two. Dylan Walker was also named after missing the City Country game with a knee injury.
His Origin hopes aside, the Rabbitohs are desperate for Reynolds' return having not won a game in his absence.
While he wasn't named in Michael Maguire's side on Tuesday, McGregor is expecting the NSW Origin hopeful to take the field at ANZ Stadium on Monday.
"I think [Glenn] Stewart will be the only one missing," McGregor said.
"I think Reynolds was talked about coming back May-June and we're into May so I think he'll play."
