Ian Mills’ photo of the moon setting into fog-filled valleys at Gerringong has snagged the prize in a recent Weatherzone photography competition.

Mr Mills lives in Gerringong but works in Sydney.
In May last year while leaving for work he spotted the scene and quickly raced back inside his house to get a camera.
“I get up very early to go to work and as soon as I saw that moon I knew I had very little time to get that photo,” he said.
He bolted upstairs, changed lenses on the run and took the photo with only seconds to spare.
“In the space of 10 seconds that light was gone,” he said.
Mr Mills runs the Gerringong Australia Photography website as a hobby.
“I mostly do weather photography and seascapes as well as lightning shots.
“That moon photo is one of my most popular photos but as usual with artists I don’t think it’s one of my best – but beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as they say.”
Mr Mills has been taking photos for many years.
He said for anyone looking to get into weather photography it was not about the equipment but about preparation and framing the scene.
“It doesn’t matter what equipment you use, it’s about being able to turn what you see into that final result.”
The photo was shot on a Canon 5D Mark II, using a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L MarkII lens with settings on f/4.5, 1/20 seconds and ISO100.
