About 40 people were evacuated from the Auburn Street mail centre after workers made the unusual discovery about 6pm.
Wollongong police duty officer Acting Inspector Kevin Bale said staff noticed a "suspicious substance coming from a package", put in place normal safety protocols and alerted emergency services.
The scene was decontaminated by Fire and Rescue NSW hazardous materials crews and police deemed the package - and its contents - safe just after 8pm.
‘‘From our investigation, it appears the powder was a protein powder," Inspector Bale said.
‘‘It was just a harmless powder being sent through the mail.
‘‘We’ve spoken to the sender of the parcel and they confirmed [the contents] and testing showed it wasn’t harmful.
Inspector Bale said the parcel had been sent from the Wollongong area.
The Mercury understands three people were decontaminated by FRNSW crews and assessed by paramedics, however none needed to be taken to hospital.
8.15pm: Police say a suspicious package found at Australia Post's Wollongong Business Hub on Wednesday night is not dangerous.
A NSW Police spokeswoman confirmed the package - and the Auburn Street mail sorting centre - had been declared "safe" just after 8pm.
The spokeswoman wouldn't elaborate on the contents of the package, only to say it was "nothing dangerous".
"No further police action is anticipated," she said.
Emergency services were called to the facility about 6.45pm when staff discovered a suspicious item and isolated it.
About 20 workers were evacuated as two Fire and Rescue NSW hazardous materials (HAZMAT) crews, from Shellharbour, donned protective clothing to assess the situation.
Drivers of Australia Post delivery vans, who tried to enter the facility were turned away due to padlocked front gate.
The Mercury understands three staff had to be decontaminated by Fire and Rescue NSW crews and that process was continuing at 8pm.
Earlier: Six Fire and Rescue NSW crews, including two hazardous materials units, are at Australia Post's Wollongong Business Hub on Wednesday night following reports an envelope containing a substance has been found.
Initial information suggests an area inside the Auburn Street facility has been isolated and two staff decontaminated.
Police and an ambulance are also on scene.
About 20 Australia Post staff have gathered outside the front gate.
The Mercury has been told by an Australia Post employee, who didn't provide their name, the item in question is an express post parcel.
The parcel reportedly contains an address that doesn't exist and a phone number that "doesn't make sense".
