An endangered silvery gibbon was born Saturday morning, the same day the Duchess and Duke of Cambridge welcomed a daughter, Charlotte Elizabeth Diana. 

It's too early to tell whether the royal birth will influence the naming of the gibbon; zoo keepers are yet to discover the gibbon's gender as it bonds with it's mother.

But overseas a Japanese zoo is rethinking naming its new baby monkey Charlotte after the name topped a public poll, following complaints it is disrespectful to Britain's newborn princess.

Veterinarian Sam Young said Mogo's newest gibbon was, like the royal baby, doing well.

"The new baby looks to be doing well, with seasoned mum, Layar, and supportive father, Arjuna, doing a superb job of caring for their new bundle of joy," he said.

The youngest gibbon is the third to be born at NSW south coast zoo since it became part of a global gibbon breeding program in 2008.

The baby joins older sister, Cinta, 5, who will be released into the wild next year, and brother, Patoot, almost 3.

Zoo owner Sally Padey said the latest addition to the gibbon family was significant, not only for the zoo but the global conservation of the animals.

"When you see that gorgeous little face looking back at you it just melts your heart, and to know that we are making a difference to the conservation of these incredible primates makes all the hard work and dedication worth while," she said.

The silvery gibbon is found on the Indonesian island of Java and is endangered, primarily due to the deforestation of its natural habitat and the expanding palm oil industry.

The World Conservation Union declared 2015 the year of the gibbon to raise awareness and educate the international community about the impact of ongoing deforestation and the illegal animal trade. 

Animal lovers can view the newborn at Mogo Zoo and learn more about the species at daily keeper presentations from 10:30am.
