Four adults and one child have been injured after a Hyundai Sonata lost control and ploughed through a school fence, just after 3pm at Wollongong Public School.

It’s believed a woman in her 30’s was trying to park the vehicle to pick up her child from school when police say she may have pressed the accelerator instead of the brake.

A mother suffered head laceration and was taken to Wollongong Hospital with her son who had multiple abrasions.

One man was treated at the scene for abdominal pain but released, while another man was taken to hospital with a fractured lower right leg. It’s believed hundreds of school children may have seen the incident, with school principal Harold Cosier assuring a counsellor would be on hand tomorrow to talk it through with parents and students.

‘‘It’s been a traumatic time for the kids, and we just need to reassure them. We’re just thankful no-one was really badly hurt,’’ he said.

The driver of the vehicle is currently assisting police with inquiries. 

Meantime, in a separate incident a female in her 40s and a boy aged around six have been taken to Wollongong hospital in a stable condition after an out of control car hit them in Fairy Meadow.

Paramedics were called around 3:05pm, with reports the two pedestrians were struck stranding outside Good Samaritan Catholic Primary School on Cabbage Tree Lane.
