It’s believed the female driver was trying to park the vehicle to collect her child from school when she pressed the accelerator instead of the brake, mounting the footpath on Church Street.
A mother, aged in her thirties, suffered head lacerations and was taken to Wollongong Hospital with her son who had multiple abrasions.
One man was treated at the scene for abdominal pain, while another man was taken to hospital with a fractured lower right leg.
Ambulance NSW Illawarra duty operations manager, Inspector Norm Rees, said with the large amount of people around it was ‘‘very lucky’’ more weren’t injured.
The school has 450 students and principal Harold Cosier said a counsellor would be on hand today to talk it through with parents and students.
‘‘It’s been a traumatic time for the kids, and we just need to reassure them. We’re just thankful no one was really badly hurt,’’ he said.
The driver, aged in her thirties, was treated at the scene for shock and is assisting police with their inquiries.
Meantime in a separate incident, a mother and son were hit by a car near the Good Samaritan Catholic Primary School in Fairy Meadow, also around 3pm.
Paramedics were called to Fairy Avenue to find a mother and her six-year-old son injured after being struck by a vehicle.
Both were taken to Wollongong Hospital in a stable condition.
