Corrimal's war memorial was vandalised just seven days before Anzac Day, with a chunk knocked from the granite monument and a large scrawl of graffiti in black text.
"No tears for dead soldiers", the inscription read, topped by the large flourished words "Scab Eater".
Melbourne punk band Scab Eater had played the nearby Corrimal Hotel the previous night.
The ensuing furore over the vandalism saw many lay the blame on the punk music community.
In an attempt to distance themselves from the act, and to show support for the armed services community, a large contingent of Illawarra punk bands will play the Call To Arms concert at Corrimal Hotel on June 13, raising money for Legacy.
"Following on from the terrible, ugly events before Anzac Day, the punk community wanted to send out a message that that behaviour was not reflective of the broader music community," said concert organiser Warren Wheeler.
"This is an event that says we are a diverse community, but we won't allow that kind of behaviour. Spray painting a war memorial is not an appropriate way to express a political view, particularly in the lead-up to an important date like Anzac Day."
Mr Wheeler said Legacy was chosen as beneficiary of the concert for its work in supporting families of war veterans.
He said musicians often had strong opinions about social issues, but that the Illawarra punk community had wholeheartedly condemned the actions of those responsible for the Corrimal graffiti.
"Punk music often uses images of war and conflict as a way to protest the horror of war, but there is a line that shouldn't be crossed," he said.
Bands including Bruce, Lint, Rampage, Steel City All Stars and Run For Cover will play the gig.
Wollongong police recently released an image of Scab Eater's lead singer, asking for information on the man in relation to the incident. Police say they are still investigating.
