I write on a matter that has been vexing me, and I know a number of other Southern Highlanders, for some time now.

It concerns Tulip Time.
Not for a moment do I criticise the wonderful work done by so many for this festival each year. But I think it is time we had a look at the style and location of this event.
For too long now, Bowral has been the show pony of this district’s social and cultural activities.
It is time we focused on other parts of our beautiful shire and boldly took on the promotion of the Australian working man’s Waratah, the symbol of our shire, of our high school, of the town of Moss Vale and of course of our rural heritage (note Avoca’s Waratah Ball and David Tranter’s nationalistic display at Robertson railway station).
Remember, it was Moss Vale that began Bush Week – a truly Australian farmers’ and workers’ festival, which did not fawn at the feet of some European clog-hopping bulb.
Bruce Mumford, Moss Vale
It’s a disgrace that there are more job losses, this time at the Mercury as the ‘‘Devil’s Tool’’ replaces human beings.
Technology is all pervasive. For example, I could not submit this letter by any other means.

I suggest the present federal government needs to broaden its horizons and get away from the three-word slogans – the latest slogan being ‘‘have a go’’ as enunciated by the Treasurer and Prime Minister in recent interviews and speeches.
Maybe this ‘‘grown-up government’’ needs to move to five-word slogans such as ‘‘have a go you mugs’’, ‘‘get back in work rorters’’, ‘‘stay at home you foreigners’’, ‘‘leave all wealthy lifters alone’’, ‘‘foreign policy is for others’’, to name just a few.
Food for thought, Mr Abbott, as you seem bereft of any real policies for this once great nation.
Richard Ruse, Figtree
The baby boomers such as me have paid our taxes for 40 years in Australia. We did not have maternity leave and we went through interest rates of 17per cent.
Now the politicians are about to blame us for today’s problems, maybe they should have a long look at themselves. We have to wait for super until we’re into our 60s. Do they?
As for their wages, we have to go through productivity increases for our meagre pay rises. Do they?
So take a long look at yourselves before you cast the first stone. This is true of all sides of politics.
Stop whingeing and get on with sorting the country out without blaming it on the other side.
From a very disgruntled, angry, soon-to-be pensioner.

Taking into account the vast amount of sympathy and support the two drug smugglers – recently shot in Bali – received from the Australian people and government and then seeing a person, while facing criminal charges of supplying cocaine, representing Australia in the recent Test against New Zealand, it really makes you wonder. Have we dropped the ball in the war against drugs – or have we just meekly surrendered?
