Another victory on Thursday against Vietnam, a team ranked 34th in the world compared to Australia at 10, would be favourable, but the Matildas are more concerned with dotting Is and crossing Ts as they prepare for arguably their toughest-ever World Cup campaign.

The Matildas have drawn tournament favourites USA in their group, as well as world No.8 Sweden. Even the 33rd-ranked Nigeria are not a team to be taken lightly.

Matildas striker Samantha Kerr, 21, who debuted at the tender age of 15 and also played in three matches at the last World Cup in Germany, echoed her co-captains Lisa De Vanna and Clare Polkinghorne by saying Australia could go deep in the tournament despite their tough draw.

"The group has been deemed the group of death but we're really focused on ourselves," Kerr said. "There's no denying we're playing two of the best teams in the world [USA and Sweden]. We believe that if we do what we're capable of, we can really take it to them and take it [our campaign] into the quarter-finals and semi-finals and as far as we want to go."

Australia will play Vietnam again on Thursday night at Jubilee Oval in Kogarah in the Matildas' official farewell match before the squad departs for Canada on Saturday.

In their most recent win against the Asian nation, all four goals came from different sources in Steph Catley, Caitlin Foord, 50th gamer Kyah Simon and Michelle Heyman. "As a team we're not really focused on the scoreline," Kerr said of Thursday's friendly. "I know it's important but we are just worrying about how we are playing our style of football. They [Vietnam] have improved over the last year since we last played them, so we'll just be happy for the win."

Kerr remembers little from her Matildas debut as a 15-year-old, but has fond memories of her goal in the 2010 Asian Cup final - a game which Australia eventually went on to win in a penalty shootout after finishing 1-1 at full-time against North Korea.

"When you're 15, you're still a kid and you're not football smart," Kerr said. "With age you learn to grow up and become more experienced. I'm only 21 but I feel like I know so much more about the game.

"As for the goal [in the Asian Cup final] I didn't really know how big a deal it was because I was so young. To score was great but to win was awesome. The team had never done it before. It was something I will remember for the rest of my life."

The Perth Glory forward plies her trade in the United States during the Australian off-season - previously for Western New York Flash and now for Sky Blue FC in New Jersey.

Being able to get away with not having a "proper" part-time job like some of her Matildas teammates is something Kerr doesn't take for granted either.

"Massive respect to the girls who work in their day jobs," she said. "I'm a little bit lucky and hopefully never have to get a job."
