A seriously injured man has knocked on the front door of a home in Sydney's inner south, seeking help after he appeared to have been stabbed in the face and upper body.

The man was bleeding heavily from wounds to his face, neck and chest when he approached the property on Henderson Road, Alexandria, about 10.30am on Thursday, Fairfax Media understands.
The resident who phoned triple zero did not know the man, thought to be aged in his 40s. It was unclear how he had suffered the wounds.
Neighbours said police had taped off a large section of Henderson Road and a helicopter was circling above the area.
The man has been taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a serious condition, a NSW Ambulance spokeswoman said.
A number of people have been taken to Redfern police station, where they are assisting police with their investigation.
