Thousands of Australians who took part in the Ice Bucket Challenge by getting doused have helped kick-start the country's largest research project into motor neurone disease (MND).

A group of 16 researchers from across Australia have been granted $1.05 million to build a genetic database that will be used to understand what causes MND, a terminal disease.
About 30,000 Australians doused themselves in icy water last year to lift MND's profile.
