Bradley Wilson accosted his victim, the only other passenger in the rear carriage of the southbound train, shortly after it left Wollongong station bound for Port Kembla just after 1pm on November 27.
The man handed over his wallet without incident.
Wilson ran from the train when it stopped at Port Kembla North.
The victim reported the matter to police, however Wilson wasn't arrested until January this year.
In court on Wednesday, he pleaded guilty to robbery armed with an offensive instrument. He was remanded in custody ahead of a sentencing hearing in the NSW District Court next month.
