Firefighters were called in to battle a small bushfire on Picnic Island at Lake Illawarra yesterday afternoon.
About 20 NSW Rural Fire Service and five Fire and Rescue NSW firefighters attended the blaze, located south of the Windang bridge.
RFS Inspector Ben Shepherd said there was no threat to property and he had not received any reports of injuries.
‘‘There’s only bush on that island so there’s no threat to property and we will be there for a little bit longer tidying that up ... and we’re not expecting it to cause any major issues,’’ he said.
‘‘[We’re] not sure at this stage how it started.
‘‘We will more than likely investigate it but at the moment we’re just concentrating on putting the fire out.’’
