Illawarra appeals co-ordinator Karen Walker said while they were still collating the funds raised, the 2015 appeal had greatly improved on last year's efforts with nearly $90,000 banked on Sunday.
"We're still waiting for more money to come through in the next few weeks," she said.
The money will help the Salvos' social work and assist services like the Carinya Cottage women's refuge and the holistic drug and alcohol program First Floor.
Ms Walker said the increase in donations was especially helpful due to an increase in residents in need.
"We've seen a real increase in those coming to us for general things like assistance with food ... I think people are having to make their money stretch a lot further," she said.
