And there could be more CBD traffic lights on the way.
Wollongong City Council has started work on installing traffic lights at two intersections on Burelli Street, which will add to the five already on the 1.1-kilometre length of the street.
The major intersection will be Auburn Street, where the lights will replace the roundabout.
Council will also install lights at the intersection of Burelli and Kenny streets, leaving Harbour Street as the only major intersection on Burelli Street without a traffic light.
Also, the Kenny Street lights will be just 82 metres from those at Atchison Street and 110 metres from the signals at Keira Street.
A council spokesman said the short distance between these lights had been factored in.
"Given the proximity of the proposed signals to the Keira and Atchison street intersections, these traffic signals will be part of a co-ordinated and integrated system that will be closely monitored and optimised by Roads and Maritime Services to minimise congestion, while catering for bus and pedestrian movements."
He said the decision to install lights at the two intersections was in line with the Wollongong City Centre Access and Movement Strategy, which was developed using a traffic modelling simulation to assess a range of options.
"At present we have more than 5100 people accessing the city centre from Wollongong railway station each day," he said.
"Some of the intersections that pedestrians use are not safe and the City Centre Access and Movement Strategy, adopted by council in October 2013, made recommendations to improve these intersections to make them safer for pedestrians."
The Auburn Street intersection was also identified as a "key pedestrian link" between the CBD and Wollongong railway station and improvements were needed to make it safer for those on foot.
The introduction of lights at Auburn Street will include the removal of the roundabout and a reshaping of the intersection itself.
The spokesman said the phasing of the lights along Burelli Street would be co-ordinated by Roads and Maritime Services, which manages all signalling within the city.
The 2013 access and movement strategy also identifies other CBD intersections as locations for traffic signals - some of which have already been installed.
The remaining 12 locations include the busy roundabouts at Victoria and Denison streets and "Gilligan's Island" at Campbell and Flinders streets.
Lights could also be installed along Keira Street at the Swan and Ellen street intersections and at the intersection of Kembla Street and Court Lane (between the mall and Market Street).
