In recent weeks, the community fought hard to keep the spirit of the 23-year-old tile monument alive but - as planned - Wollongong City Council moved in its demolition men in preparation for new "boat seating".
As news of the prawn's death filtered through social media, numerous teary emoticons peppered the Save the Prawn! Facebook page, with Dean James Brown rechristening the suburb #BAREkeley.
Vocal campaigner Scott Barnes was somewhat philosophical about the prawn's demise, only hurling one expletive at the council before saying "at least we went down fighting".
Likewise, Matt Honeybrook remarked "at least ya tryed [sic] good work".
Others remained impassive about the creature's plight, with Theo Vaso saying "I'm sorry, I hate that prawn".
Scott Cassidy not-so-gently reminded residents to focus on more positive things.
"Just got a million skate park and your [sic] whinging about a bloody prawn," he said.
