Friendly fire is a common occurrence within sport as teammates take their commitment to often harmful lengths. Overnight, Australian cricketer Moises Henriques suffered an horrific injury after a collision with Surrey teammate Rory Burns. The impact left Henriques nursing a badly broken jaw, while Burns was suffered serious facial injuries.

We take a look at some other cases of sporting friendly fire - some brutal and some bizarre.
Maicon and Nicolas Otamendi (Porto FC)
It happens so often in football. One player goes for the header while the other attempts to get a boot on the ball. The end result is inevitable, but that doesn't make it any less painful. In this case it was Nicolas Otamendi of Porto who was on the receiving end of a nasty boot to the head from teammate Maicon.
Luke Parker and Lance Franklin (Sydney Swans)
Imagine running head first into a 100-kilogram, 1.96-metre ball of muscle. Unfortunately for Luke Parker, this was what he was faced with when he bravely entered a marking contest for the Sydney Swans against the Essendon Bombers. Unfortunately, Parker came out of the clash a little worse for wear.
Monica Niculescu and Klara Koukalova (Tennis)
Doubles tennis is a mix of lobs, volleys and perfect coordination between teammates. Trust is essential between partners. It's difficult to see how Monica Niculescu will ever be able to rely on Klara Koukalova again after Koukalova launched a powerful serve straight into the back of her head. To make matters worse, the pair lost the match and potentially their friendship.
Brian O'Driscoll and Paul O'Connell (Ireland)
Clashes between Ireland and England are among the most brutal in world rugby. The last thing you want during a match like is a full blooded knee to the head from your own teammate. With the match in the balance, Irish talisman Brian O'Driscoll was stretchered from the ground after wearing a sore one from countryman Paul O'Connell.
Jason Gillespie and Steve Waugh (Australian cricket team)
An infamous incident for Australian cricket and somewhat similar to the Henriques injury. Steve Waugh collided with on-rushing teammate Jason Gillespie in a sickening clash. The bump resulted in both players being taken to hospital, with Waugh suffering a broken nose and Gillespie a fractured leg.
James Hird and Mark McVeigh (Essendon)
Bombers legend James Hird suffered one of the more horrific 'friendly fire' injuries, falling face first into the knee of teammate Mark McVeigh during the round-six clash with the Fremantle in 2002. Hird was contesting a mark when he was tripped from behind, resulting in an awkward collision with McVeigh. Hird was taken from the ground with blood pouring from his face as well as a severely broken nose.
Keith Ballard and Tomas Vokoun (Florida Panthers)
Florida Panthers defenceman Keith Ballard accidentally slashed teammate Tomas Vokoun with his stick after lashing out in frustration after conceding a goal. Ballard was trying to hit the cage in anger but instead connected with Vokoun's face, causing a large gash on the side of the keeper's head.
Alasdair Strokosch and Joe Ansbro (Scotland rugby team)
It is not often the case that players are injured celebrating a victory. But for Alasdair Strokosch and Joe Ansbro, this was exactly what happened following Scotland's historic 9-6 victory over Australia at Newcastle in 2012. In one of the more bizarre friendly-fire incidents, the two players jumped into one another and clashed heads as the team rallied together to celebrate their shock victory. Both sustained deep cuts, each sporting a look of bewilderment as to what had just occurred.
