For four minutes on stage at the Wollongong Eisteddfod, Maddison was Sally Brown from the 1999 Broadway revival of the musical You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.
She performed a rendition of My New Philosophy, a song from the musical which is sung to the character Schroeder.
Maddison was competing in the musical theatre in costume solo section at the eisteddfod.
The year 5 Mount St Thomas Public School student started singing in a vocal group last year and was asked in early 2015 to join a show group and participate in eisteddfods.
Maddison learns singing at the Encore Performing Arts Studio in Figtree with teacher Kristy Williams.
Mum Michelle Jolly said her daughter also studied drama at the Encore studio under teacher Megan Cracknell.
‘‘Musical theatre allows both the dramatic and the vocal abilities to be used which complements both genres,’’ she said.
‘‘Maddy particularly enjoys the performing in character which musical theatre allows.’’
She said her daughter’s confidence had grown through performing in eisteddfods, and she had developed plenty of friendships.
‘‘Maddy’s confidence has grown incredibly due to the friendly atmosphere of her studio and competing in eisteddfods,’’ she said.
‘‘The sportsmanship and camaraderie displayed between all competitors is inspiring.
‘‘It doesn’t matter what studio each child belongs to, the fact is that after exiting the stage, a competitor will receive a high five or a congratulatory ‘good job’ from the next performer and that makes competing in eisteddfods extra special.’’
Vocal sections continue at the eisteddfod on Thursday and Friday.
Dance troupe weekend, the eisteddfod’s biggest event in terms of competitor numbers, is on at the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre on Saturday and Sunday.
