I started looking into and researching the electrical trade in year 10 at high school and I discovered it was an industry that had a wide variety of applications and opportunities. It seemed like a safe future proof career choice due to continual advancements in technology.
Throughout my training I have never felt like it was either an advantage or a disadvantage being a woman in a male-dominated industry. I have always been treated fairly and equally, which is what I have always requested and expected from my work colleagues. I don't believe just because I am a female I should receive any special treatment or benefits.
It is a positive step in the right direction for Peter Buckley (Wollongong general manager) to say Thomas and Coffey wants to take on more female tradespeople. I would encourage any woman interested in the industry to complete a trade.
My job mainly entails maintenance of electrical equipment and machines, new installations and fault finding in mining, industrial and commercial applications.
I would like to complete my Cert IV in electrical instrumentation. Instrumentation is the use of instruments to monitor and control a process. This is a facet of the electrical industry that I have always been very interested in. I am very excited to complete the course and see what path it leads me down.
