Several mums took to the council’s Facebook page to vent about the $200,000 new park which was opened last week, with mother of two Ambre Alexis leading the charge.

On Monday she wrote that the playground wasn’t ‘‘that amazing’’ and that her children grew bored quickly and missed the slides, bridges and climbing frames of the old park.

She added it ‘‘really could have been more fun with a few [more trampolines] around the space so the kids can play games with them’’ and asked ‘‘where was a see saw [sic] or the rockers like the old pelican rockers’’.

Another Facebook poster, Courtney Smith, said it was a ‘‘massive fail’’ as it didn’t suit all ages and did not have enough equipment to cater for the number of children visiting the CBD.

‘‘There’s plenty of space for a bigger playground, I don’t understand how they came to the conclusion that such as small playground would be okay,’’ she wrote.

‘‘How many mums pop into town to run errands and stop by the park? Now were [sic] going to dread it because it will be overcrowded or no one will go because its boring and doesn’t suit all ages.’’

Similarly, Lisa Girdo-Tesanovic said the playground was unsuitable for younger children.

‘‘The trampoline has springs, there is nothing at ground level for them to look at and there is really limited space in the climbing frame to be able to provide supervision,’’ she said.

‘‘It was popular with smoking teenagers this afternoon, though.’’

But at the park on Friday, Cordeaux Heights mum Anna Vincent disagreed with this criticism, saying her six and eight-year-old sons were enjoying a ‘‘lunch-stop’’ in the park.

‘‘It seems to be good, I like the new sturdy swings, the bucket swing looks like a lot of fun and the canopy looks like it will be good to keep the sun off the kids,’’ she said.

Likewise, grandfather Stephen Royall thought the new play space was ‘‘fantastic’’ for his four-year-old grandson, Flynn Royall.

Responding to the Facebook complaints, a Wollongong council spokeswoman said the park had been designed using ‘‘industry best practice ... playground design which focuses on providing accessible play spaces that promote social inclusion and participation for all families and children’’.

‘‘We use a series of principles when designing or replacing playgrounds,’’ she said.

‘‘These principles consider industry best practice, and include making use of natural elements, building opportunities for children to experience risk and to be challenged and provide a range of play experiences.’’

She also noted that the council worked closely with children from local primary schools and a preschool to test out its designs, and had received some ‘‘very positive feedback’’.

She said the council had received one phone call in addition to the Facebook comments about the new park and had already installed s new infant’s swing after criticism from parents.
