An analysis of Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research data reveals the Illawarra's proclivity for indulging in vice, revealing figures on crimes around pornography, prostitution, drink, drugs, guns and gambling.
Cannabis was by far the most common drug found, with 756 people caught with the drug across the two local government areas. Alarmingly, second place went to amphetamines, a class of drugs including methylamphetamine or "ice", with more than 250 cases.
More than 160 people were found dealing drugs, with almost 100 stopped for trafficking amphetamines. Only 21 were found to be dealing ecstasy, seven were dealing cocaine, and 22 cannabis.
There were 60 offences of cannabis cultivation, but just one case of manufacturing drugs across both Wollongong and Shellharbour.
Despite Mercury exposes detailing the illegal brothel trade flourishing in Wollongong, just two offences of prostitution were recorded in the area. There were none in Shellharbour.
Fourteen pornography offences occurred in Wollongong and seven in Shellharbour, both above state average figures.
There were just 20 betting and gambling offences across the two areas, but more than 450 offences around prohibited and regulated weapons. Wollongong's 358 weapons offences put the area above the state average, while 97 in Shellharbour put it below state figures.
Around 430 liquor offences were recorded in the two areas, with Wollongong's 320 being a significant drop from 2013 but Shellharbour's 109 a sizeable uptick from 73 the year before.
