With students on holidays, Waniora Public School took the opportunity to celebrate NAIDOC Week early.
The week runs from July 5 to July 12 but last Wednesday the Bulli school put on a special event to acknowledge NAIDOC Week, which celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements.
Waniora Public School learning and support teacher Dianne Pyers said the students also enjoyed the opportunity to recognise the contributions Indigenous Australians make to our country and society.
"We organised a whole day of activities for the students. It was a fantastic day which started with a whole school performance by Indigenous Infusion," she said.
Walangari Karntawarra, the 2010 Deadly Visual Artist of the Year winner, also entertained students on June 24.
The Arrernte Aboriginal elder from Alice Springs lives and works in Sydney. He is an international award-winning, contemporary Western Desert painter, an accomplished musician and performer.
"Walangari enthrals audiences with his wonderful stage presence as a didge [didgeridoo] player and dancer," Mrs Pyers said.
"It was a pleasure and joy to have the much sought after performer and teacher of Aboriginal art and culture at the school."
