Learning about the literature, artwork and history of Indigenous cultures has been at the forefront of studies at St Columbkilles Catholic Primary School in recent weeks.
This work culminated with a special school assembly last Friday to acknowledge NAIDOC Week.
School middle leader Michelle Lace said the June 26 assembly showcased this year's NAIDOC theme: We all stand on Sacred Ground: Learn, Respect & Celebrate through the use of song, symbol and prayer.
Aboriginal artist and community elder Uncle Kevin Butler created a mural for the Corrimal school with the help of its students.
"This mural, as well as a painting of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop also created by Uncle Kevin, was blessed by our parish priest Father Richard Healey," Mrs Lace said.
Holy Spirit College Indigenous co-ordinator Kim Hobbs also attended the assembly.
Mrs Lace said with students now on holidays, it was decided to celebrate NAIDOC Week early.
NAIDOC Week, which runs from July 5-12, celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements.
