The work to beautify and improve the scenic Bald Hill Reserve continues this week with Wollongong City Council starting the second stage of its upgrade project.
The $5.3 million facelift of Stanwell Park's picturesque Bald Hill lookout started in earnest in March.
To be done in three stages, the work included an amenities block, a larger pedestrian plaza around the food van and a new pedestrian area around the Lawrence Hargrave memorial.
There will also be extra parking in a new lower car park near the intersection of Lady Wakehurst Drive and Lawrence Hargrave Drive, and a realignment of Lady Wakehurst Drive and Otford Road to allow the construction of a roundabout and bus parking bays.
The second stage of works started on Monday and includes roadworks, the roundabout, and the associated walkway, which the council says will improve traffic safety, parking, walkways and heritage.
Some of the road and roundabout works at the site will be completed by Roads and Maritime Services. The council anticipates the road works associated with the upgrade to be completed by November.
Access will be affected while these works take place but the site will remain open to the public.
Wollongong Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery asked community members to stay patient while the council improved the traffic access, parking and increased access for buses.
"We will also upgrade the services for a renewed amenities building, which will include a coffee offering," Cr Bradbery said.
Meanwhile, the council is working to finalise the tender for landscaping works and the detailed design for the new amenities building.
Bald Hill was one of three Wollongong council projects to benefit from the NSW government's $100 million Port Kembla port lease fund.
