There was a bit of the good, the bad and the ugly.

No, it's not the name of a movie but what Illawarra residents and businesses thought of this year's state budget.

The good was the $14.7 million allocated to the Bulli Hospital upgrade.

Work on the new Aged Care Centre of Excellence is due to begin this financial year.

Illawarra domestic violence and housing support workers have voiced mixed feelings about the money allocated to their support services in this budget delivered on June 23 by NSW Treasurer Gladys Berejiklian.

As was expected, already-announced Illawarra health projects and road infrastructure dominated the budget.

But Wollongong emergency services shared in millions of dollars.

The State Emergency Service received a major boost, with $7.3 million to be spent in 2015-16 on a new headquarters in Wollongong.

As well, $500,000 has been allocated to kick-start a major refurbishment of the Wollongong Fire Station.

The 2015-16 health budget also includes money for the completion of the car park and a elective surgery unit at Wollongong Hospital.

On roads, the budget confirmed further spending on several Princes Highway projects across the region.

This includes $3 million in planning money for the Albion Park Rail bypass and $140 million for continuing on with the Foxground and Berry bypass. The M1 Princes Motorway (formerly the F6 Freeway) shared in the money, with $2.5 million planning money for improvements (slow-vehicle climbing lanes) between Picton Road and Bulli Tops and $500,000 to investigate an interchange at the base of Mount Ousley.

There will also be upgrade projects at Keira High School, Illawarra Sports High School and Lakelands Public School, although specific amounts weren't evident in the budget papers.

Wollongong councillors have called on the state government to direct some of its billion-dollar housing affordability fund (mentioned in the budget) towards covering the costs of much-needed infrastructure in West Dapto.
