Around 8.30pm, the 50-year-old man heard a loud noise at the door of his North Wollongong unit. Two men, armed with a knife and iron bar, entered the house and assaulted the resident.
The intruders ransacked several rooms at the Cliff Road unit, taking cash, a mobile phone and other personal items before fleeing the scene.
The resident called for assistance from a neighbour, who called police and paramedics. The man was left with cuts, bruising and shock, and was taken to Wollongong Hospital.
Wollongong police Detective Inspector Ben Hopper said the man answered a knock at the door, and the two men burst in.
"At the moment we still need to speak to the victim. We're not sure if he has been released from hospital yet," Insp Hopper said.
"We're regarding it as a fairly targeted attack."
Wollongong police established a crime scene at the unit, and are now searching for two suspects.
One man was described as aged between 25 and 30 years, wearing a black hooded jumper with a green logo on the shoulder, dark track suit pants, and running shoes.
The second man is described as being of slim build, and wearing a grey hooded jumper.
Both men were also wearing gloves, hats and scarves.
Anyone with information on the incident should contact Wollongong police on 4226 7899 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
