House hunters looking for a stylishly quirky family home have had their prayers answered with a former Presbyterian church hitting the market this week.
The commanding home at 12 Farrell Street is listed with A.M. Rutty agent Rolf Lokker – a long-time admirer of the heavenly house.
It was snapped up in 1988 for $67,000 by friends of Mr Lokker – the agent just missing out on buying the property himself at the time.
‘‘I was jealous when they got it, but we’re friends,’’ he laughed.
They converted the former church into a four-bedroom, two-bathroom family residence, retaining many of the classic period features.
A small former Sunday school building on the property was resurrected into a two-bedroom flat, complete with modern kitchen and bathroom.
Dating back to 1905, the home has retained a number of unique original features, including dramatic lancet windows complete with stained glass, and grand vaulted ceilings.
Featuring soaring timber ceilings with exposed beams and extensive use of wood throughout, the home feels both spacious and warm, Mr Lokker said.
Within hours of the property going up online the agency was swamped with inquiries.
‘‘A lot are probably asking for a price guide, which I can’t give until we get a bit of feedback because there’s just nothing tocompare it with,’’ Mr Lokker said.
With many buyers now looking for homes with personality, Mr Lokker said he was expecting a hectic build-up to the property’s July 25 auction date.
‘‘I think there are a lot of buyers out there who like things that are different – a statement property,’’ he said.
‘‘This is certainly not a run-of-the-mill property.’’
The home will be open for inspection on Saturday from 2pm to 3pm.
