The region’s MPs – from both parties – have chosen to remain silent after news of an Australian Federal Police investigation into allegations of ‘‘enrolment fraud’’ surfaced late on Thursday.
The Mercury contacted the region’s state Labor MPs Ryan Park and Anna Watson, along with federal Labor members Sharon Bird and Stephen Jones on Friday – all preferred not the comment.
Parliamentary secretary of the Illawarra, and Liberal Kiama MP, Gareth Ward also chose not to speak about the matter.
NSW Opposition Leader Luke Foley said Ms Hay ‘‘has offered the AFP every assistance with the investigation, and continues to do so’’.
The Mercury also contacted 2015 state election contender Arthur Rorris, who has since returned to his role as secretary of the South Coast Labour Council, and Ms Hay’s pre-selection challenger Paul Scully for comment.
Wollongong councillor Ann Martin, who also ran for preselection, told the Mercury on Thursday night she was ‘‘shocked’’ at news of the investigation.
