Meet UOW's new "mindfulness pods" - helmeted, futuristic resting chairs charged with boosting student performance and wellbeing.
A chair has been installed in the UniCentre building as part of a growing focus at UOW on students' "mindfulness" - a productive mental state achieved by focusing on the present.
A second pod has been installed at the Kooloobong student accommodation.
Popularised by Google as employee sleep pods, the chairs incorporate a sound system for playing music or - as will be the case at UOW - a guided "mindfulness practice".
The pods recline and gently vibrate but are not intended to put students to sleep, according to UOW resilience researcher Sarah Tillott.
"Ultimately we identify that the student's life is very stressful,"she said.
"The research suggests that 20 minutes of mindfulness a day promotes wellness, reduces stress and increases productivity."
A research proposal to test the effect of the chairs on students' mindfulness - involving a survey before and after sitting, is awaiting approval from the university's education committee.
