The Wollongong Wolves name will be revived in 2016.
The club announced at a reunion dinner on Saturday that they would be returning to the name they held when claiming back-to-back NSL titles in 1999-2000 and 2000-2001.
The Wolves have been known as South Coast since 2010 and were the Wollongong Community club in 2009, but have opted to return to their roots from next season.
In addition, a new logo has been unveiled.
"Everyone still calls us that, even outside of the region, everyone knows us as the Wollongong Wolves, so for us it is about putting Wollongong back on the map," Wolves chairman Andrew Byron said.
With A-League expansion expected in the coming seasons, the Wolves could have the chance to get back on the national scene.
The club's first preference is to havetheir own team but the region may end up sharing a franchise with Southern Sydney. For that to occur, solid foundations need to be built in the Illawarra, according to Byron.
"We had to get our house in order," Byron said.
"Just the simple stuff of being a football club. We still don't have our own facility but when we do we will be able to play [the] juniors out of it and the Illawarra Stingrays.
"We still want to play our first grade at WIN Stadium, and even play the first grade Stingrays alongside us, but our club still needs a home base, somewhere where we can try and underpin the possibilities of the future.
"If we do get a stand-alone team, the grassroots all the way through is there."
