NSW Ambulance paramedics were called to BlueScope’s No.6 quencher facility about 10.55pm on Monday where they found the man with serious injuries to his left leg.
The Mercury understands the man was working in the pit when his leg was crushed under a heavy piece of steel.
He was taken by NSW Ambulance paramedics to Wollongong Hospital in a serious condition.
Wollongong SES crews, Illawarra Police Rescue Squad, Fire and Rescue NSW personnel and fellow workers used an on-site crane to retrieve the man.
WorkCover inspectors visited the site on Tuesday morning and are investigating.
A WorkCover spokeswoman said the contractor was issued a prohibition notice for not having appropriate documentation for the work being undertaken.
