Bulli filmmaker Rhiannon Bannenberg is ecstatic her feature film Ambrosia will soon be released in cinemas nationally.
But the first-time filmmaker is even more excited that the movie, based on her struggles growing up with chronic neuropathic pain, will premiere at Gala Cinema, Warrawong, on August 8.
The 25-year-old said the film was shot exclusively in and around Wollongong and the cast and crew were all from the Illawarra.
"It was really important to have the premiere in my home town so to speak. I'm really proud of being from Wollongong and I was really eager to showcase how beautiful it is to a wider audience," she said.
Ambrosia features Rebecca Montalti in the lead role as India - a young woman living with the ongoing effects of a childhood accident. During a weekend away with friends, India struggles to deal with the introduction of a new face - a mysterious character named Harriet who threatens to destroy their bonds of friendship forever.
"The script in part is based with my experiences with chronic pain but the actual storyline and events that happen in the film have been embellished dramatically," Bannenberg said.
The drama, written, directed, scored and filmed by Bannenberg, recently won the Special Jury Prize at the 2015 International Gulf of Naples Festival.
"I'm thrilled and somewhat astonished to see the reception Ambrosia is getting from people. I never believed in my wildest dreams it would be screened in cinemas around the country - let alone in overseas festivals," she said.
Ambrosia is the first independent Australian drama to be released by new cinema-on-demand platform Fan-Force.
"We are proud to be supporting Ambrosia. Rhiannon is a huge talent who has created a sensitive and insightful film that we think people will love," Fan-Force co-founder Danny Lachevre said.
Ambrosia screens at Gala Cinema on August 8 from 7pm.
