The fast-changing market has seen many of the older style homes renovated or rebuilt, and anything with a glimpse of the ocean sells quickly.
The median house price for the suburb is now $400,000, up 10 per cent in 12 months, according to Australian Property Monitors.
And now plans are under way to start work on a boutique complex of 12 apartments in what Belle Property Wollongong sales agent Alexander Duncan calls a "one-of-a-kind" development for the Port Kembla region.
Titled Portside, the 16 Quarry Street development is being built by Wollongong builder Alex Pupovac, with construction due to start in October. The market launch is on Sunday.
Mr Duncan said the apartments would be built to the highest standards, with stone benchtops in kitchens and bathrooms, stainless steel Bosch appliances and built-in wardrobes. Select master bedrooms would have a walk-in wardrobe and private balcony.
"The apartments will capture a light-filled dual aspect to enhance generous floor plans and glamorous finishes," he said.
Mr Duncan said the suburb had the potential to rival North Wollongong for downsizers seeking a coastal apartment.
"Port Kembla has been voted one of the best beaches in NSW and in addition to its great coastal location, it's quiet, and it has the same proximity to the shops and amenities as North Wollongong does," he said.
"I think the views in Port Kembla are better than North Wollongong [where] sometimes you only have an easterly view or a northern view.
"With this [Portside] location, the northern view takes in all the way up the coast through the national park. The southern view is over Port Kembla Beach, down to past Killalea State Park."
The two-bedroom apartments are priced at $580,000. Mr Duncan and Jayne Langford are agents.
